Huntsman Spiders Are in Rivervale Suburbs and They’re Big, Ugly and Everywhere

January 26, 20254 min read

Picture this: you're lounging on your front porch, soaking up the sun, when suddenly, a spider that looks like it’s been plucked straight from a movie scene scurries across your lawn! You let out a little scream, and your family rushes outside to see what’s up. While this might sound like something out of a horror flick, it could soon become a reality, as huntsman spiders are making themselves at home beyond Sydney’s bushland! With Australia’s growing population and expanding suburbs, these impressive spiders are popping up more frequently in our neighborhoods.

So, are huntsman spiders becoming guests at your place?

What’s a Huntsman Spider Anyway?

Huntsman spiders are large, furry creatures that call Australia home. You’re likely to spot them in suburban areas, and while they might seem a bit intimidating, they’re not as fierce as they look. These spiders can grow up to 15 cm in length, and while some folks worry they’re dangerous, they’re actually quite shy!

Why Do They Look So Big and Hairy?

You may be wondering what’s up with the size of the huntsman spider, and, uh, how it has sort of an oddball look. While they bite when threatened, they are also much more likely to run away than face you down. Indeed, their large size, as well as their appearance, help keep them safe from any potential predators. Being big now means fewer animals want to munch on them and that their darker colors help these animals blend into their surroundings. Which means, while they might not be the beauty contest winners of the animal world, they’ve got a few smart survival tricks up their sleeves!

What Do They Look Like?

Huntsman spiders are, well, huntsman-sized and not difficult to spot – especially around Sydney’s suburbs! Often known as Giant Crab Spiders, they measure up to 15 cm (6 in) and are brown or grey with long legs and a chevron pattern on their abdomen. They aren’t aggressive, but will bite painfully if they feel threatened. If you see one in your house, don’t freak out! The kinder action is to catch it and take it outside.

How Can I Spot a Huntsman Spider?

In Sydney, the Giant Huntsman Spider is the most common. With its big, brown, flattened body and long legs, it’s often found in homes and gardens. If you think you’ve seen one, take a moment to check its eyes. Huntsman spiders have two large eyes in front, while most other spiders have eight smaller eyes arranged in rows. They also have a broad, flat body compared to other rounder spiders, and their legs tend to be quite long.

If you’re still unsure, snap a photo and show it to someone who knows their spiders! If you prefer, you can always leave it be and call someone who can help.

Where Can I Find Them?

Huntsman spiders love to hide in dark, cozy spots both inside and outside your home! You might find them under furniture, in closets, or even in your basement. Outdoors, they enjoy gardens, sheds, and garages.

What Should I Do If I Find One?

If you find a huntsman spider in your home, yard or property, leave it alone! “They are not aggressive and generally, only bite if they are threatened. If you want to rid the room of it, carefully cover a spider with a cup and slide a cardboard underneath it to trap it. Then you can bring it out so you can set it free.

Keep Your Sleeping Space Spider-Free

We're all aware that spiders can creep us out, and that includes huntsman spiders. They won’t kill you, but they’ll scare the pants off you! So if you see one in your house, it’s best to stay away from your sleeping quarters.

If You See One, Stay Calm

If you do see a huntsman spider in your home, there’s no need to freak out! They’re not aggressive and can actually be helpful by keeping other insect populations in check. If you’d rather not share your space with a spider, don’t hesitate to reach out to a pest control expert!
