Pest Control Tips for Boaters
Hi boat lovers! We all enjoy our stay on a vessel, but sometimes birds get a little too comfy on our vessels. Watching them from a distance is charming but inviting them to get comfortable on your boat is another story entirely. But fear not, we have a few tricks up our sleeves to keep them at bay.
Birds
Birds of all types like to roost or even nest on our boats, but there are some simple methods for discouraging them. Don’t feed them. All of us have thrown a little bread overboard, but it can attract more birds and their friends who want a free meal.
Another trick is a plastic owl. Some people claim it does miracles, particularly when it sways in the wind, while others are far less convinced.
Finally, colourful flags, metallic strings or even hanging CDs could do the trick, as the reflections usually scare birds away.
Rodents
You have noticed any signs of rat or mouse activity on your boat, you will want to take rapid action as these little fellows can do some serious damage. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so store food in glass jars and remove garbage frequently.
You can cover vents with wire mesh or hardware cloth to keep them out. Theoretically, they’re night owls, so having lights on and a radio playing might discourage them from coming around.
