The difference between carpenter ants and termites

February 09, 20252 min read

Hey there! Let’s talk about two of those pesky little critters that can cause a little havoc in our homes: carpenter ants and termites. Though they may look alike at first glance, there are significant differences between them that can help you tell them apart. Both of these little dudes like to bury in the paddock and can do some extreme harm, but termites are the more ruinous of the two and can create devastation in a quicker time.

The primary way to differentiate between carpenter ants and termites is to examine how each of them creates their tunnels. And knowing what to look out for can make dealing with any infestations even easier!

Carpenter ants don’t even eat wood! Instead, they use their powerful mandibles to excavate neat little galleries in soft, damp wood to build their homes. Although they don’t derive any nutrition from the wood, their tunnelling can be quite damaging, as they burrow galleries to accommodate their colonies.

Termites, on the other hand, are chewing away at the wood they tunnel through, and therefore are capable of creating much more destruction. As they feed on nutrient-dense fibres, they create tunnels, typically resulting in extensive damage before you can tell there’s anything wrong on the outside. Carpenter ants like moist wood, while termites are less picky with their menu!

What fascinating colonies termites have! They construct their snug nests of soil, saliva, and even a little dung, which creates a complicated labyrinth of tunnels. You’ll find mud tubes on the exterior walls of infested buildings, which are little highways to their nests and back. This is one way to identify whether termites (as opposed to carpenter ants) are to blametaking one look at these tubes can make their presence clear.

Termites are social insects and considered to be among the most damaging pests. The destruction that can be caused can affect the actual framework of your home or company, and sometimes it may even result in sagging ceilings and floors. They do contribute to recycling old wood but invade about five million homes a year and leave a costly trail of destruction.

So, be on the lookout for these tiny intruders, and you’ll be more equipped to guard your house!
